For the TOMY toy company's "Star Trek" U.S.S. Enterprise 34-inch die-cast model product, my role was to research and draw the complex plating patterns that appear on the hull. I also reviewed CAD drawings from the factory for accuracy. Screengrab shows the TOMY prototype on Adam Savage's TESTED channel on YouTube.
I researched the pattern from the best available film frames and publicity photos from "Star Trek: The Motion Picture." TOMY is the first to attempt this level of detail and accuracy in a commercial replica of this subject.
I researched, reverse-engineered and drew plans for Glen Swanson's replicas from the 1953 film "The War of the Worlds". These were crowdfunded and sold in small quantities directly to fans online and at conventions.
The final products are shown in the photo on the left. Some of my research, based on film frames and publicity photos, is on the right. The Martian "Electronic Eye" is seen in the film menacing Ann Robinson's character, while the small "maproom model" of the flying Martian War Machine is only seen in publicity photos.
My elevation drawings were translated into 3D by a CAD artist, and professionally printed and finished.
From 2016-2019 I was the Product Designer for "Studio Replicas Group" (later "Master Replicas," now defunct). Here's my package design for a planned line of accurate dinosaur fossil replicas, licensed and authorized by the Smithsonian Institution.
To commemorate the Apollo Moon Landings, I designed this Lunar boot print 3D display plaque.
Photogrammetry on a stereo pair of images taken on the Moon in 1969 was the basis for the the initial 3D model, which was then reworked to match details in the original photos. The 3D printed boot impression was recast in resin for the final product.
Licensed replicas of the HAL 9000 computer from "2001: A Space Odyssey" were Master Replicas' flagship product. Machined aluminum and custom glass lenses were a highlight of its construction.
My early sketch for the HAL replica. Intensive research into the actual props used on screen went into its design.
Design sketches and final prototypes for the HAL 9000 products.
In the film, HAL constantly shows status graphics indicating the condition of the spaceship. I replicated some of these designs for the product's screen and edited this short video as a promotional tool.
